Don't go to "It's-Not-Fair" land

I was telling stories with a fifth grade class last week, and one of the students got really mad when I didn't call on him to tell his story. I could see him falling into a sulk, when his (incredibly engaged and inspiring) teacher leaned over and whispered to him, "Don't go to It's-Not-Fair land."

This week he ran past me as I was waiting to go into another classroom. He waved and called out, "Hi Ruth! Sorry I got angry last week. I was being a bit reactive."

I was flabbergasted. How many adults do you know who have the grace and self-awareness to take responsibility for their feelings, and make a clear, complete apology--while running out to shoot some hoops?

Hooray for the next generation.
